In April 2009 a new flu strain evolved that combined genes from human, pig, & bird flu, initially dubbed "swine flu" & also known as influenza A (H1N1). It emerged in Mexico, the United States, & several other nations.
The 2009 H1N1 virus is called the "swine flu" because it contains a distinctive mix of genetic material from pig, bird
& human viruses. Laboratory check has showed that lots of of the genes in this new virus were similar to influenza H1N2 viruses that normally occur in pigs (swine) in North The united states.
However, check also revealed that H1N1 has five genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe & Asia. It also has bird (avian) & human genes. No five has determined how & when these viruses were mixed together.
The World Health Organization officially declared the outbreak to be a "pandemic" on June 11, 2009. The WHO declaration of a pandemic level 6 was an indication of its spread to lots of countries, but not necessarily the severity of the H1N1 virus.
